Juicing/juice cleanses has become very popular due to the fanatics claiming it will help you lose weight, cleanse your system, detox your body and apparently help kick-start your metabolism, but when it is taken to the extreme where you start limiting your diet to just juice for weeks on end is when it starts to become a big big problem. Not only will you stop losing weight and severely damage your metabolism, but will end up doing more harm than good. Depending on how long your going on a juice diet for weight/fat loss it may be one of the most unhealthiest and harmful ways to lose weight.

It’s great that your body is getting all these micronutrients, but what about 2 macronutrients that are just as important, fat and protein. Without protein your body won’t only lose fat, but also a lot of lean muscle mass especially if your not getting enough calories, therefore your metabolism will also take a hit and become slower. A lack of fat will leave your skin and hair in a very bad condition, it will also make your ability to absorb fat-soluble vitamins much harder. Furthermore, the benefits of these micronutrients are real, but your body can only process so much at once before it ends up excreting the rest.

The main reason for this is because it’s only temporary and isn’t part of your lifestyle so once you get back to your normal diet all that water weight you lost will be gained back within a day or two. So really a juice diet is just a crash diet claiming to be good for you, but since your body thinks it’s starving it will lower your metabolism and the longer/more often you do this the higher the chance your metabolism will be lowered permanently.
  4. Apparently juice cleanses help detox your body, but there really isn’t anything to detox in the first place. The fact is that your liver, kidneys and intestines already filter out the unwanted things we ingest and expel them through our waste (urine, sweat, poop).

Not to mention how time consuming and expensive juicing can be since juicers cost from anywhere between £20 – £200 and if you think you’re getting a bargain for those cheaper juicers then your mistaken cause they are designed poorly and break more often than not.   1. Wow, I never knew that these juice diets would mean that these marconutrients would be lost and I certainly don’t want to be losing any muscle mass. I need to tone up a bit so I will integrate it into the overall diet plan as you have outlined, thanks in advance, very good information to know…

  2. I would have to agree with you that juicing to lose weight on a diet would not be the best way to go about it.

    I believe our bodies need the best balance to everything it requires and that means liquids and solids. Having just liquids, I would not think would ever work out for extended periods of time without having other requirements as you mentioned in your article.

    We need to eat a fully balanced diet of food.

  3. Fads in diets are normally just that fads and very bad for you in the long term. If you just juice and choose not to eat any other foods this is not good for you. Great and well written article, thanks for sharing your knowledge. My father has type 2 diabetes, so I found that the diabetic diet is actually one of the best ones out there for a healthy lifestyle.

    1. My father also has type 2 diabetes and his diet needs to be really clean to keep healthy. It may be a bit to clean for most people though haha.

  4. Good article here. Although I could never commit to a full juice diet, I do have the occasional protein free breakfast with a smoothie, makes a refreshing change.

    I find it hard to see how people can live on juice only diets since being slim is one thing, but tucking into a juicy steak another 🙂

    1. Some people are just desperate and are willing to try anything to lose weight. It’s a shame really since then can’t enjoy a juicy steak 🙂
