When it comes to weight loss meal replacement shakes are often one of the most popular supplements to get and it’s easy to see why… they come in many tasty flavours, are very convenient/portable and help provide all your nutrients in just one shake making the nutrition part of losing weight very simple. However, weight loss depends on knowing what these meal replacement shakes contain since they are meant to replace a healthy meal that has essential nutrients, protein, fats, carbs and fibre. You must also remember that if you’re not eating in a caloric deficit then weight loss just won’t happen no matter how many meal replacement shakes you use.

So Do They Really Work ?

Unfortunately drinking meal replacement shakes won’t mean that you’ll automatically start losing weight because that would just be too easy and if it was that easy everyone would be fit. When it comes to weight loss you have to be in a caloric deficit and there is no way around that. This deficit can either come from the diet or exercise or a combination of both. Although, doing a combination of both has been proven to be the most effective for consistent weight loss.

So for the meal replacement shakes to work you will have to be in a caloric deficit, but it’s not all bad news because these shakes are a delicious way to cut calories without starving or depriving yourself. Furthermore, sometimes you just don’t have the time or energy to cook a healthy meal and drinking one of these shakes will always be 10 times better than ordering a pizza online or grabbing unhealthy snacks to eat.

Scientific Studies

There has been several scientific studies to show that meal replacements shakes do produce positive weight loss results, for example in 2012 a study published in the “Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism”  showed that subjects who used one to two replacement shakes a day lost about 2% more of their total body weight over a six-month period than subjects who followed diet book suggestions.

How To Use A Meal Replacement Shake

Of course meal replacement shakes can be used in place of any meal or used as a healthy snack to hold you over until your next proper meal, but these shakes are more likely to work when you feel full and satisfied. So if you’re going to use these meal replacement shakes make sure that you find one that has high protein and fibre while being low in sugar, the combination of those 3 things will keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Most people like to use a meal replacement shake in the morning for breakfast because it’s quick and filling, simply a shake and go ! While others prefer to have it in the evening as a way to fight late night food cravings, it really is up to you and your lifestyle.

  1. Hi Andrew, I have used meal replacement shakes before and seen some nice results (lost fat and maintained muscle mass). I was using Optimum Nutrition Pro Complex gainer for breakfast since it contains a good amount of protein and complex carbs.

The only drawback was that I was feeling hungry before lunch time. What do you suggest in this case ? should I have a whey protein shake in between breakfast and lunch or a small snack like some fruit ?

    Thanks !

    1. If you’re still trying to lose weight then you could either have a little more of your shake at breakfast (like half a scoop more) or add some berries as snack inbetween your breakfast and snack.

  2. Meal replacement shakes are an interesting supplement most and I have lost over 10 pounds the past few months using these shakes. Currently, I am using a pea protein powder which is working very well for me, pea protein is very high in protein and low in sugar and is very filling. I take mine usually in the morning and then one in the evening, I am still eating two meals per day mainly just soups and salads. This combination is working well for me, even my physician’s are amazed at how much weight I’ve lost in such a short amount of time.

  3. Hi Andrew !

A few years ago I tried some of those meal replacement shakes you are talking about and they really do the trick if you combine them with exercise as you pointed out, but they are really not so good by themselves. I just speak from my own experience, maybe it works differently for others.

Thanks for the tips on this topic, Really interesting !
