The Benefits Of Macadamia Nuts

High Quality Of Fats

Many nuts contain a lot of Omega 6 fats and when taken in large amounts it can be very unhealthy because it helps promote many diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, auto immune diseases and inflammatory diseases. With macadamias there Omega 6 content is much, much lower in fact per 100 grams macadamia nuts only have 0.36 grams of omega 6 fats. Now to make up for the lack of Omega 6 macadamias contain more monounsaturated fat which makes it a much higher quality source of fat compared to other nuts because it actually helps reduce inflammation and fat cells from growing.

Helps Improve Blood Lipid Profiles

There has been many studies that link macadamia nut consumption to improved blood lipid profiles which reduces coronary risks. One study published in the “Journal of Nutrition” in 2008 compared the effects of two similar diets with equal amounts of macronutrients, but with one group receiving the bulk of the fat nutrient from macadamia nuts and the other group getting their fat from other sources. After five weeks both groups reduced their bad cholesterol, but the macadamia nut group had a much larger drop in both LDL/total cholesterol.

High Fibre

Like many other nuts one serving of macadamia nuts contains 2.3 grams of fibre which is around 10% of your recommend daily fibre intake. The high fibre content macadamia nuts provide will keep you satiated and satisfied for a long time reducing the amount of food you eat often leading to weight loss.

Good For Your Digestive System

Having a good level of magnesium in your body will ensure all the nutrients you consume is efficiently taken in by your digestive system. Macadamia nuts contain a very high level of magnesium making sure that you reap as many benefits as possible from your foods.

Despite the fact that macadamia nuts have many benefits when eaten there are still a few things that you should be aware of.

Macadamia Nuts Warnings/Drawbacks

  • Macadamia nuts contain the most calories and fat per serving compared to any other nuts/seeds so attention to the portion size is very important if you are trying to lose weight.
  • Very high in fat and very low in carb (only 3.9 grams of carbs per serving) macadamia nuts are perfect if your on a high fat and low carb diet, but if not then you should stick to other nuts like pistachios, cashews and almonds.
  • If you’re a dog owner it’s important for you to note that macadamia nuts are toxic for dogs and can cause weakness, vomiting, loss of coordination, tremors, and hyperthermia.

In conclusion macadamias are lower in Omega 6 fats and higher in monounsaturated fat compared to other nuts, they’re a little bit more expensive, but the price tag is worth the health benefits. Of course if you have anymore questions about macadamia nuts then leave a comment below.

  1. Oooooh. I looove macadamia nuts ! They are delicious ! I have never seen one in it’s shell before, so that was cool to see….

I didn’t know about the improvement of blood lipids or any of the facts that you listed. I’m glad I like them so well 🙂

It’s crazy that a nut can cause hypothermia in dogs ! Wow !

  2. I found this article really interesting, but I would like to know a little more about the nutritional information like what other minerals are in these type of nuts as well how many calories per 100 grams we would be consuming. This way I think I could decide if I would buy them even they are a little more expensive.

    1. In 100 grams of raw macadamia nuts there are 718 calories, 76 grams of fat, 14 grams of carb (9 grams of fibre) and 8 grams of protein. It also contains (per 100 grams) 8% of your daily calcium intake, 20% of your daily iron intake and 32% of your daily magnesium intake.

  3. Wow, I didn’t know that macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs. Also didn’t know that they contain less Omega 6 fats than other nut types. You learn something new every day.

I buy nuts every month and make an oats muesli out of them. This way I get some in every day without overindulging, which is so tempting with nuts as they are all so moreish.

    1. Yeah nuts are definetly one of the easiesit foods to overinduldge on so that’s a great idea putting them in an oats muesli.
